Quite what the 'guitar amp' flavour of distortion is doing in this context I'm not sure, but it adds to the versatility of a process that goes well beyond subtle tape or output‑stage warmth. With pre‑emphasis and pre‑filter options, plus a Mix control to blend in the unprocessed sound, there's a lot you can do with this section alone. It's very effective at adding a crunchy edge to a too‑clean recording, and can go further, though it doesn't reach the realms of sonic mayhem you can get from the likes of Sound Toys' Decapitator. Hot Virtual Wax The centrepiece of the Sonitex STX 1260 experience is its vinyl emulation, which is pretty comprehensive. Divided across three pages, it mimics not only the bandwidth constraints of vinyl, but also its pitch instability, sibilance and different types of surface noise. All of this is highly configurable, so you can turn your pristine loop into anything from an audiophile high‑grade disc played for the first time, to a knackered charity‑shop find. In fact, it can do more than just vinyl; the presets include some quite effective cassette-tape emulations, and the band‑pass filter used to control bandwidth is resonant, so you can set up a fairly convincing tape 'head bump' if you want to.
Pros Capable of mimicking all the separate processes by which audio degrades between the studio and the sampler! Detailed and convincing reproduction of vinyl artifacts. Cons None, as long as you don't expect extreme distortion effects. Summary Sonitex STX 1260 will make your music sound worse — but in a good way! SONITEX offers a complete suite of processing dedicated to adding texture to digital audio. This allows you to bring the "gritty vibe" from vinyl records and vintage hardware samplers into your modern DAW environment. Features - Dynamic processing to add initial punch and density. - Mid/Side stereo adjustments. - Distortion with pre-emphasis circuit and dry/wet control. - 5 Distortion types (Saturation, Distortion, Amplifier, Digital 1 + 2). - Flexible distortion pre-filter. - Vinyl pitch instability with multiple warp shapes, and speed control (syncable). - Sibilance processing to emulate high frequency distortion on vinyl playback. - Overall bandwidth control with separate high & low frequency roll-off and "bump" control. - Additional processing to mimic vinyl groove wear and the "phone"-sound on early systems. - Flexible control over density, level and stereo spread on both vinyl "pops" and "clicks". - Optional program dependant density for pops and clicks. - 20 noise types ranging from vinyl noise and hiss to mechanical noises.

The Noise stage is particularly flexible. Not only can you choose from 25 preset types of surface noise, but you can also load your own noise samples, and there are numerous options as to how the noise should integrate into the sound. For example, you can choose whether or not the noise itself should be subjected to the bandwidth limitations defined in the Tone section; you can gate the noise so that it only appears when the source signal crosses a threshold; and you can choose to have it adapt to the dynamics of the source signal. There's also a Sync option, which is supposed to ensure that noise starts and stops with host playback rather than being output continually when playback is stopped. This didn't seem to do anything for me, in Cubase 6, but you can use the gate to similar effect. Finally, the Digital stage is a fairly typical 'bit crusher', which allows you to reduce both bit depth and sample rate, and apply appropriate (or inappropriate) anti‑alias and resonant output filters.
Do you like lo-fi/grit/dirt/distortion? I usually don't like synthedit plugins, but I came accross one that just seems to be special and a cut above the rest: This is otiumFX Sonitex STX-1260; a lofi-plug thats featureset is much too long for me to list here. I was actually looking for a saturation plugin when I came across and old kvr thread from 2006 that mentioned it. I'm so glad I didn't let the little synthedit icon put me off demoing it. I bet most people wouldn't have a clue this is a synthedit plugin. It's much better than what I was actually looking for, I know not of a plug that is anything like this. The Compadre beatpuncher is pretty crazy too, it's a compressor dedicated for drumbeats. I highly recommend them both (you can get both for $80 or so). I wanted to share them with the world because I think these are rare gems (the devs have hardly any credit for this small achievement). A search on these threads yielded 0 results so I guess nobody has ever heard of this, or likes to keep secrets (you terrible people, you).
