Average rating 4. 48 · 86 ratings 8 reviews | Start your review of Bhagavad Gita: The Song of God This is probably Isherwood's literary masterpiece, unrecognized because Westerners are uncomfortable with the Bhagavad-Gita (and for good reason – it's an epic poem narrated by God that endorses wholesale slaughter). Judging from the portrait of Swami Prabhavananda in My Guru and His Disciple (Isherwood's second-best book) the renunciate wrote none of the actual text, just helped with clarifying the Sanskrit and fine-tuning the theology. Isherwood loves Vedanta, and gives his cynical English int.. Completely defines my philosophy on religion and most of life, in general. Really, really interesting and fantastic and amazing. An excellent book for discussions--and if you've read a lot of Salinger, especially Franny and Zooey, you'll see the connections--Salinger was well versed in Hindu and Buddhist philosophy. I will need to read it many more times to really understand it... This is the translation of Bhagavad-Gita I recommend.

Founder of the Vedanta Society of Southern California Swami Prabhavananda was one of the pioneer swamis sent to America by the direct disciples of Ramakrishna to build on the work started by Swami Vivekananda at the turn of the century. The swami was born in India on December 26, 1893. In 1914, after graduating from Calcutta University, he joined the Ramakrishna Order of India and was initiated by Swami Brahmananda, a direct disciple of Sri Ramakrishna. In 1923, Swami Prabhavananda came to the United States. After two years as assistant minister of the Vedanta Society of San Francisco, he established the Vedanta Society of Portland. In December 1929, he came to Los Angeles where he founded the Vedanta Society of Southern California the following year. Under the able care of the swami, the Society grew into one of the largest Vedanta Societies in the West, with monasteries in Hollywood and Trabuco Canyon and convents in Hollywood and Santa Barbara. Swami Prabhavananda was a man of letters as well as a man of God.
While studying over 12 versions of the 'Gita' with its 700 verses in Sanskrit / English ( also Spanish versions), I find this work by the authors amazing! This was the first Gita I read over 45 years ago and find it even more inspirational today. Awesome! How did they do it? A great work. ( I'm a slow reader, but today, on my Kindle, I can read it in less than two hours. ) Top reviews from other countries 5. 0 out of 5 stars Excellent translation with an insightful introduction from Aldous Huxley Reviewed in the United Kingdom on October 22, 2016 Verified Purchase I really enjoyed this translation. It's clear, and does not indulge in overly flowery language or obscure turns of phrase that reduces the comprehensibility of the messages contained. Highly recommended. the printing of the mass market is quite poor -looks like something photocopied several times- and i also found the typesetting and paper stock of the mass market version less than desirable. the hardback version, on the other hand, is beautifully printed and bound. i find each much, much easier to read. i feel motivated to pick it up and read and keep reading versus the mass market version. as far as content: many of the other reviews accurately depict the content. it's excellent -easy to read and absorb. i own numerous versions of the gita and stephen mitchell's version of the gita is my favorite. i read mitchell's version more all the others. it's absolute poetry. i also appreciate eknath easwaran's version as well. prabhavananda's version, this one, is definitely a keeper as well. i recommend owning multiple versions of the gita. it's likely that one version may touch you in way that another does not. bottom-line: highly recommended -at least the hardback version. Reviewed in the United States on June 6, 2020 Verified Purchase This translation and presentation of the Bhagavad Gita is amazingly clear, lucid, and understandable.
The combination of formats - verse and text to suit the material - works extremely well, it seems to me. The beauty of the verse is preserved where it is appropriate, but it can limit clarity. The use of text for some parts avoids getting the meaning trapped in the rigors of the verse format. The introduction by Aldous Huxley, with his explanation of the "Perennial Philosophy" is a valuable addition to grasping the essence of the Gita. I have studied several versions of the Gita and this one is by far the best for me. Reviewed in the United States on May 16, 2011 Verified Purchase I have not seen _any_ book in recent years that was as badly printed as this edition of the Bhagavad Gita. It's so badly printed as to make reading unpleasant. The text was clearly scanned or photographed from an earlier printing; you can seen the line screen (the dots that come with a digital reproduction of a low-resolution scan or photo). The text is muddy, blurry, unclear. The paper quality is _worse_ than most newspapers.
