Stoker's understanding of the human psyche, and terror, combined with a page-turning and fluent structure, make this book not only classic, but unforgettable and worth every page. If you get fifty pages in, you'll be used to the structure and entirely hooked. I strongly recommend it, with the note that the best experience will come if you read this when you've time to really soak into the book in long stretches, instead of taking it in small doses in doctor's offices or etc. Written by a customer. October 11, 2009 Whether you have read the book or not, no doubt you know the basics of this classic 1897 novel. Although it wasn't the first Gothic or the first vampire literature, it set the stage for every vampire story that followed it. You'll already know what Dracula looks like, where he lives, what he is about, his strengths and his weaknesses. What you may not know - as I did not - is: 1. Although we do visit Castle Dracula in Transylvania, the bulk of the story takes place in England, where our villain pursues innocent women, and is pursued by a noble band of strapping heroes that include The Imprisoned Solicitor, The Lordly Aristocrat, The Charming American, the Thoughtful Psychologist and The Elderly Dutch Doctor, whose wisdom guides them all.

Chasing Vermeer By Blue Balliet Calder Pillay and Petra Andalee, two Chicago residents and good friends, live in the same neighborhood and go to the same school. Tommy Segovia used to life right across the street from Calder, and they were best friends - but Tommy moved away. One day in class, Calder and Petra's teacher, Ms. Hussey, gets a strange un-addressed letter that informs her that the letter's writer has stolen A Lady Writing, a famous painting by Johannes Vermeer -- and will return it only after an 'age-old mistake' had been corrected. The letter claimed that certain people had painted works of art and they were incorrectly attributed to Vermeer, and that the letter's writer was going to correct this and get the paintings listed under the correct artist's names. Two other unrevealed people received nearly-identical letters. Calder and Petra do lots of research on The Lady Writing and on Vermeer. Calder also uses a unique intuitive device: he carries around a set of twelve pentominos (they look like Tetris pieces) that look like letters of the alphabet, and when he needs an idea, he pulls out a random piece and waits for the first word that starts with that letter to pop into his head - and then he tries to apply that word to the problem in front of him.
